The Trouble with Transformer Hum Most audio components feature a circular, toroidal transformer at their core. While these transformers are excellent for their intended purpose, they do have a significant drawback. The presence of incoming mains DC voltage, which can vary from 1,000mV to several hundred millivolts, can lead to an annoying "mechanical hum." Just when you're engrossed in the quietest of tracks, your ears pick up this unwanted low-level hum emanating from inside your audio component.
