• Cartridge Weight and Compliance: The cartridge should match the tonearm's effective mass. High compliance cartridges are better suited for lighter arms, while low compliance cartridges match well with heavier arms.
• Output Level: Ensure the cartridge's output is compatible with your phono preamp (MM or MC).
• Tracking Force: Verify that the cartridge's recommended tracking force is within what your tonearm can adjust to.

The lifespan of a turntable cartridge can vary widely based on the build quality, materials used, and how often and carefully it's used. The stylus, or needle, usually needs replacement before the cartridge itself. A stylus typically lasts between 500 to 1000 hours of playtime. The cartridge body can last much longer, often several years, as long as it's not physically damaged and maintained well. Regular cleaning and proper handling can extend the lifespan of both the stylus and cartridge.

The cartridge on a turntable is a critical component that translates the mechanical movements from the record's grooves into an electrical signal, which can then be amplified and converted into sound. It houses the stylus (needle) that tracks the grooves of the record and the internal generator mechanism (either MM or MC) that converts these movements into audio signals.
