Hegel H95 Integrated Amplifier
Norwegian brand Hegel introduces its latest streaming integrated amplifier, the H95, succeeding the outgoing H90 model. Despite its conservative 60 watts per channel (wpc) rating, the H95 surprises with its robust output. The amplifier boasts a modified analogue stage, incorporating small enhancements in power supplies and analogue stage implementation.
Hegel's SoundEngine2 technology plays a pivotal role in reducing signal distortion to nearly imperceptible levels, ensuring a deeply immersive music or movie experience. The H95 achieves a 'damping factor' up to 20 times higher than the industry average, resulting in a dynamic, controlled, and potent bass response. This robustness enables 60 watts of output power to confidently drive challenging speakers.
Streaming Capabilities
Compared to its predecessor, the H90, the H95 features an internal network streamer supporting UPnP, Spotify Connect, and Apple AirPlay. A forthcoming firmware update will add AirPlay 2 support. An ethernet input facilitates network connectivity. With third-party apps like mConnect, the H95 seamlessly streams music collections from PCs or hard drives on the network, along with music streaming apps and internet radio. While the USB input is limited to PCM resolutions of 24bit/96kHz, the S/PDIF and Network inputs raise the PCM resolution limit to 24bit/192kHz.
DAC Performance
Significant engineering focus has been dedicated to the H95's DAC. Hegel asserts that it utilises the same DAC as the H120 and H190 models, representing a significant leap from the H90. The DAC delivers a superior level of D/A conversion, offering smoother, more precise, and dynamic sound reproduction. The internal DAC is accessible via the internal network streamer, as well as back-panel coaxial, USB, and three optical inputs.
Input Options
In addition to digital inputs, the H95 provides a pair of unbalanced (RCA) inputs, though it lacks a phono stage. It also features a variable line out (RCA) for integration with a subwoofer or home theatre processor.
