Streaming may dominate the way many of us discover and listen to music today, but for a huge number of hi-fi enthusiasts, the CD collection is far from redundant. In fact, with thousands of albums sitting on shelves around the country, there has arguably never been a better reason to invest in a high-quality CD transport. The Mission 778CDT has been designed precisely for that purpose.

Compact, beautifully built and deliberately focused on extracting digital information from a CD as accurately as possible, the 778CDT joins Mission's 778 range alongside the 778X integrated amplifier and 778S network streamer.

But rather than trying to be everything to everyone, Mission has taken a refreshingly straightforward approach: concentrate on reading the disc properly, minimise noise and timing errors, and send a clean digital signal to the DAC of your choice.

The result is an interesting proposition for anyone who still values physical media but wants CD playback to sit comfortably alongside a modern streaming system.

Mission 778CDT: CD Player or CD Transport?

There is an important distinction to make before going any further.

The Mission 778CDT is technically a CD transport, not a conventional CD player.

A normal CD player contains both the mechanism required to read the disc and an internal digital-to-analogue converter, or DAC. That means you can connect its analogue outputs directly to an amplifier.

The 778CDT takes a different approach.

There is no internal DAC and no analogue audio output. Instead, it reads the information from the disc and sends that information digitally through either its coaxial or optical S/PDIF output. You therefore need an amplifier with digital inputs, a standalone DAC, or another suitable component to convert that signal into analogue audio.

This isn't a cost-cutting exercise. It allows Mission to concentrate the engineering budget on the elements that matter specifically to a transport: the disc mechanism, servo control, power supply, clocking and digital output circuitry.

It's also an increasingly sensible approach because many modern integrated amplifiers already contain excellent DACs.

The Mission 778X, for example, incorporates an ESS ES9018K2M-based DAC, making the 778CDT a natural companion.

Design and Build Quality

The first thing you notice about the 778CDT is its size.

At approximately 236mm wide, it occupies roughly half the width of a traditional hi-fi component. The result is a compact piece of equipment that can fit comfortably into rooms and systems where a rack full of large 430mm-wide components might feel excessive.

Despite those compact dimensions, this certainly doesn't feel like a lightweight budget CD transport.

The 778CDT weighs around 5kg, which is considerable for something of this size. Its substantial construction helps give the player a reassuringly solid feel while also providing a stable platform for the transport mechanism.

Mission has carried across the styling established by the 778X amplifier. The result is an attractive combination of retro influence and modern minimalism.

Available in black or silver, the front panel is clean and uncluttered, while a dimmable OLED display provides playback information and supports CD Text. Mission describes the entire 778 range as sharing the same compact, half-width styling, allowing the 778CDT, 778X and 778S to form a visually coherent system.

It's an especially appealing design for listeners who want genuine separates without their system visually dominating the room.

Mission Has Taken the Transport Mechanism Seriously

The most important part of any dedicated CD transport isn't the display, remote control or styling.

It's what happens after you press Play.

Inside the 778CDT is a dedicated CD mechanism with a precision optical system and a custom servo-control architecture.

The job of the servo system is more important than it might initially sound. A CD isn't simply spinning at a constant speed while the laser sits in one position. The mechanism has to continually control disc rotation, track the microscopic data encoded on the disc and maintain accurate reading as the laser moves across its surface.

Mission says its system has been engineered to provide stable disc rotation, accurate tracking and robust error correction. That focus makes sense.

When you're building a dedicated transport, accurate and reliable retrieval of the information stored on the disc is the entire point.

Mission also employs a shielded transport mechanism intended to reduce unwanted vibration and electrical interference. Reports surrounding the launch additionally describe a dual-core processing arrangement combining a 32-bit RISC processor and dedicated MCU for servo operation.

It is a considerable amount of engineering for something whose task can superficially appear as simple as "playing a CD."Tackling Jitter

Another major area of the 778CDT's design is clock accuracy.

Digital audio depends heavily on accurate timing. When transmitting an S/PDIF digital signal to a DAC, variations in that timing are commonly referred to as jitter.

Mission uses a temperature-compensated crystal oscillator, or TCXO, as the master clock within the 778CDT. Its purpose is to provide a stable timing reference for the digital output.

The master clock also receives its own low-noise power regulation.

Rather than simply mounting an inexpensive disc drive inside an attractive case and adding digital outputs, Mission appears to have treated the clock, power supply and transport mechanism as interconnected parts of the same digital source.

That is exactly the sort of attention you would hope to see in a dedicated transport.

Power Supply Design

Power supplies aren't particularly glamorous, but they are fundamental to good hi-fi engineering.

Mission has separated the power arrangements for important sections of the 778CDT rather than allowing everything to share one noisy supply.

Key areas including the transport mechanism, laser, decoder and master clock are supplied through dedicated low-noise power arrangements. Mission's aim is to reduce interference between different parts of the machine and protect the integrity of the outgoing digital signal.

The 778CDT also employs a low-noise toroidal transformer, which is another indication that Mission has approached this as a proper hi-fi component rather than simply repackaging a generic computer-style optical drive.

For us, this is one of the more interesting aspects of the 778CDT.

Its engineering philosophy is very simple: remove unnecessary circuitry and concentrate the budget on reading and transmitting digital audio correctly.

Connectivity

The rear panel reflects that same philosophy.

You get:

1 × coaxial S/PDIF digital output
1 × optical S/PDIF digital output

And that's essentially what a dedicated CD transport needs.

There aren't analogue RCA outputs because there's no DAC inside the machine.

The coaxial connection will probably be the first choice for many dedicated hi-fi systems, particularly when connecting the 778CDT to the Mission 778X or an external DAC. Optical remains extremely useful, however, particularly when electrical isolation between components is desirable.

Having both outputs also makes the Mission compatible with an enormous range of amplifiers, DACs and active speaker systems.

More Than Just CDs

One particularly useful feature is that the 778CDT isn't restricted to conventional commercially produced CDs.

Mission specifies compatibility with CD, CD-R and CD-RW, as well as data CDs.

There is also USB storage playback.

Connect a compatible USB storage device and the 778CDT can function as a local digital-file transport as well.

Mission lists support for formats including:

WAV, FLAC, MP3, WMA, AAC and APE, with FAT16, FAT32 and exFAT storage formats supported according to Mission's current product specifications.

This doesn't transform the 778CDT into a network streamer—that job is handled by the 778S—but it provides a useful additional way of accessing a locally stored digital music collection without involving a computer or network.

What Does the Mission 778CDT Sound Like?

This is where discussing a CD transport becomes slightly more complicated than reviewing a conventional CD player.

The final tonal character of a 778CDT-based system will depend significantly on the DAC connected to it.

Unlike a conventional CD player, the Mission isn't responsible for converting the digital signal into analogue audio. Consequently, qualities such as tonal balance, output stage character and much of the ultimate presentation are influenced by the downstream DAC and amplifier.

The job of the Mission is to give that DAC the best possible digital signal to work with.

A well-engineered transport should therefore largely disappear from the listening experience.

What you're looking for is stability, low noise, accurate timing and reliable disc reading rather than a transport imposing a dramatic sonic signature of its own.

Early owner feedback has been encouraging in this respect. One 778CDT owner posting on the What Hi-Fi? forum described the machine as very quiet in operation and reported no disc-reading problems, although they felt operation could be a little slow. Another verified owner review specifically praised its pairing with the 778X.

The engineering choices Mission has made—particularly the TCXO clock, dedicated power regulation and purpose-built transport—are all aimed at giving the downstream DAC a stable digital source.

With a revealing DAC and amplifier, that's exactly what you want.

Pairing the 778CDT with the Mission 778X

This is probably the configuration that will make the most sense to many buyers.

Connect the 778CDT digitally to the 778X and the amplifier's internal DAC takes over conversion duties.

The 778X uses an ESS ES9018K2M Sabre32 DAC, giving the two components a very logical division of labour: the 778CDT retrieves and transports the digital information, while the 778X handles digital-to-analogue conversion and amplification.

Add the Mission 778S streamer and you have a particularly neat three-box digital system:

778S — network streaming
778X — DAC, analogue sources and amplification

All three components share the same compact visual design.

For somebody who wants streaming convenience without abandoning a large CD collection, it's a genuinely attractive concept.

Using the 778CDT With an External DAC

You certainly don't have to own a Mission amplifier.

In fact, one of the biggest attractions of buying a transport rather than an integrated CD player is the ability to choose your own DAC.

Connect the 778CDT to a good standalone converter and you can effectively tailor the digital front end to the rest of your system.

It also creates a useful upgrade path.

Instead of replacing an entire CD player when you want to improve your digital source, you can retain the Mission as the disc-reading mechanism and upgrade the DAC separately.

Likewise, owners of high-quality integrated amplifiers containing good DAC stages may find that buying another CD player with its own DAC simply duplicates circuitry they already own.

In those circumstances, a purpose-built transport such as the 778CDT makes considerable sense.

CDs Versus Streaming

It's tempting to frame products like this as part of a battle between physical media and streaming.

It doesn't need to be.

Streaming is extraordinarily convenient. It gives us almost instant access to enormous music catalogues and is one of the best tools ever created for discovering new artists.

But CDs offer something different.

You own the album.

There's no subscription required to listen to it. The mastering doesn't suddenly disappear because a streaming service changes its catalogue. You can pick up the case, read the booklet, explore the artwork and build a collection that remains yours.

There's also something enjoyable about making a deliberate choice.

Choose an album.

Put the disc into the player.

Press Play.

Then listen.

The 778CDT fits particularly well into a system where streaming is used for discovery and everyday listening while CD remains the preferred format for a carefully chosen music collection.

Everyday Operation

A dedicated hi-fi component still needs to be pleasant to use, and Mission hasn't forgotten the practical details.

The 778CDT includes a full-function remote control, and the handset is designed to work across the 778 family, including the 778X and 778S.

The OLED display supports CD Text and can be dimmed, allowing the player to remain unobtrusive during evening listening sessions.

The compact chassis is another benefit in everyday use. Measuring approximately 236 × 96/98 × 357mm, depending on whether the chassis or published overall measurement is referenced, the Mission occupies considerably less shelf width than a conventional full-size CD player. Mission specifies a net weight of 5.04kg.

That combination of small footprint and substantial weight gives the 778CDT a particularly appealing feel.
